Redevelopment Update - by Joel Godde - President of WSLSC

We acknowledge The Age article on our redevelopment plans, but we want to share the heart of our mission and purpose. The Williamstown Swimming & Lifesaving Club has been on an important journey, working with the community to design a modern facility that truly serves Hobson’s Bay and beyond.

We are fuelled by dedication, not profit. Our operating expenses are covered by the modest membership fees of the same volunteers who brave the water for you every weekend. To suggest we are a “private club” serving cocktails is simply false and misses the point of our over one hundred year volunteer effort to keep people safe. Whilst we greatly appreciate the support we receive from all levels of government, our membership fees cover our operating expenses.

Our current building is almost a century old, designed before the life-saving equipment we now rely on was even invented. Our redevelopment is about creating the space required to store the tools and train our volunteers that ensures community safety and future rescues.

Our greatest pride is that for over 105 years, our rescue services have been absolutely free. Since 1920, no one has ever paid to be rescued at Williamstown Beach. This new facility will ensure that continues for another century.
